On Clyde ground, the stone is the easy part — the base, the crown, and the river are the job

Clyde runs on gravel drives. It is a Pigeon River valley town — spread across the river floor between Canton to the east and Waynesville to the west, on the US 19/23 four-lane with I-40 just to the north, home to Haywood Community College and a short drive from Lake Junaluska. That low valley gives Clyde more of Haywood County’s scarce gentle ground than the ridge towns, but it splits the county’s gravel work into two very different jobs, and almost every drive here has the same complaint after a hard summer: the gravel washed, the drive ruts, and there is a pile of good stone in the wrong place. The instinct is to order another load. On this ground, that is money in the river.

The soil map says why. The slopes Clyde’s upper drives climb — Wayah and Burton at 27.8–29.7%, with the bouldery Cullasaja and the steep Plott (named for the Plott Balsams that wall in Haywood) at 32.7–36.5% — are all well drained. Rain doesn’t pond and soak in; it runs. Drop loose stone on an uncrowned 27.8% grade and you have made a streambed of it: water hunts out the wheel tracks, scours away the fines holding the stone together, and ferries the rest down toward the river. Down on the valley floor the failure flips — but here is the part that makes Clyde different from the ridge towns: the gentle Braddock and Hayesville river terraces (12.2–14.4%) are well drained too. The valley problem isn’t soil that ponds. It is the Pigeon River itself.

ABC vs. #57 — two stones, two jobs

Around Clyde, the wrong stone on the running surface is the gravel mistake we correct more than any other. ABC — “aggregate base course,” what everyone here calls crush-and-run — is crushed angular stone with the fines (the rock dust) left in. Those fines are the glue: compact ABC and it locks into a hard, dense layer that holds a crown and carries a loaded truck. That’s why ABC is the right choice for both the base and the driving surface, on the terrace and the climb alike. #57 stone is the opposite — clean, washed, roughly 3/4-inch rock with no fines. It drains like a colander, which makes it perfect for a wet base layer over soft ground on a low river lot, a French-drain trench, or the stone around a culvert — but with nothing to lock it, loose #57 on a 27.8% Wayah climb just rolls underfoot and migrates downhill. We use each where it belongs: ABC where the drive has to hold its shape, #57 where water has to move through it.

Depth, base prep, and compaction

“Just dump a load and spread it” fails here for a simple reason: a thin skin of stone over soft or unprepared ground pumps down into the dirt under the first wet tire and disappears. A drive that lasts is built up. On the gentle Braddock and Hayesville river terraces along the Pigeon, the subgrade is the weak point: where it’s wet or soft we cut it out, lay geotextile fabric so the stone can’t mix down into the mud, then build a compacted ABC base back up — and on a low lot we build the whole drive up a few inches so it sits above standing water. On the steeper Wayah/Burton slopes above town we key the base into firm ground and run it deeper — toward 4 inches — because the fast-shedding mountainside demands it. The bouldery Cullasaja ground on some upper lots is a Typic Humudepts full of cobbles and stone, so a slope drive there often means building the right base over rock rather than digging through it. Either way the stone goes in lifts and gets compacted, not feathered loose. A typical finished surface is 2–4 inches of stone over a base built to the drive’s actual traffic and grade.

Crown and culverts — the part that keeps your stone

What carries a well-built gravel drive through a Pigeon River storm season isn’t the stone itself — it comes down to the shape and the water exits. A crown (the drive humped slightly higher in the center) sheds water sideways off both edges within a few feet, so nothing runs the length of the surface — and on a flat valley drive that crown is what stops the standing water and ruts. On a long climb above the Pigeon, any water the drive does gather has to have an exit — a graded ditch with turnouts, a broad-based dip, or a culvert where concentrated flow crosses under the drive. At the road, a properly sized culvert under the apron is what keeps a state-road ditch from running across your gravel. This is the overlap with driveway grading — on the steep slopes, gravel and grading are one job, because the best stone in the world washes off a drive that has no crown and no place to put the water. How much gravel — the tonnage math

People are often surprised how much stone a drive eats. The working figure is one ton per 80–100 square feet at 2 inches deep. A 100-foot drive at 12 feet wide is roughly 1,200 square feet — about 12–15 tons for a single 2-inch surface course, and more if it needs a fresh base under it. Stone is sold by the ton delivered, so we measure your drive’s length and width, decide how deep the base and surface need to be for the grade, and figure the tonnage off real numbers — not a round guess that leaves you short or paying to truck off the excess. On a low Pigeon River lot that includes the extra stone to raise the drive above the flood line; on the long climbs above town it includes the deeper base the Wayah grade needs. Permits: the encroachment rule and the 1-acre line
