How to stop erosion on a steep mountain lot in NC.

Stop the water before you treat the dirt. On Western North Carolina’s dominant ridge soils — Henderson’s Ashe at a typical 40.2% slope, classed somewhat excessively drained — storm runoff sheds fast and rills any open ground. The sequence that holds: a diversion or swale graded above the eroding area, silt fence keyed in along the downslope edge, riprap-lined ditches where flow concentrates, and erosion matting plus seed on bare cut faces. If the work disturbs more than one acre, NC GS 113A-57(4) (Sedimentation Pollution Control Act of 1973) requires an approved erosion-control plan filed 30 or more days prior to initiating the activity, at $119/acre; under an acre, the same measures are simply best practice on mountain ground.
Erosion control here is water control. The dirt is just the evidence.
Most erosion advice is written for flat ground, where the problem is rain landing on bare soil. In the WNC mountains the problem is rain landing on bare soil and then accelerating. The USDA-NRCS Web Soil Survey shows why: across Buncombe (NC021), Henderson (NC089), Transylvania, and Haywood, nearly every dominant soil series is classed well drained or somewhat excessively drained, on slopes that range from 0% in the valley bottoms to 95% on the steepest mapped ground. Soil like that doesn’t soak up a storm — it sheds it, and runoff on a 40.2% Ashe grade is moving at cutting speed almost immediately. That’s why a slope that “just needs grass” keeps rilling: every fix below works only if the water is handled first.
First move: intercept the water above the damage
Walk uphill from the eroded spot and find where the water comes from — a roofline, a driveway, a bench, a neighbor’s cleared lot. The cheapest, highest-leverage fix on a mountain property is a diversion: a small graded berm-and-channel above the slope that picks runoff up and carries it to a stable outlet before it ever touches the bare ground. Where the water needs to travel across grade, a wide, shallow swale moves it slowly enough not to cut. Get this one move right and everything downhill of it has dramatically less work to do — it’s the same logic as our drainage work, and when the runoff is headed at a house instead of a slope, the same regrading logic applies to moving water away from the foundation.
Silt fence: necessary, and almost always misused
Silt fence doesn’t stop erosion — it stops sediment that’s already on the move from leaving your property. That’s a legal and a neighborly obligation, and it’s why the fabric fence is the first thing NC DEQ’s erosion and sediment control program expects to see on disturbed ground. But it has to be installed right: keyed into a trench, posts on the downhill side, running along the contour at the downslope edge — never strung across a channel where concentrated flow will blow through it. Under the state’s more than one acre trigger it’s a required element of an approved plan; on the under-an-acre jobs that make up most homeowner work, it’s the best-practice floor we install anyway, because the state’s sediment hotline (1-866-STOPMUD) exists precisely for the mud that ends up in the road ditch.
Armor the places water must concentrate
Some water can’t be spread out — it has to run in a defined channel down the grade. Bare dirt loses that fight every time, which is where a riprap-lined ditch earns its keep: properly sized stone over fabric lets the flow ride the rock instead of cutting the soil, down grades that would gut an earthen ditch. The same goes for culvert inlets and outlets, where the flow is fastest. This is the workhorse fix for mountain driveways and private roads, and we detail it on the ditch & riprap page — it’s also the difference between a repair that survives the next big storm and one that washes back out, which is the whole story of our storm-damage work.
Cover the cut: matting and seed, in that order
A bare cut face is the most erodible surface on the property — subsoil, no roots, full grade. On Buncombe’s Evard and Burton ridges, where dominant slopes run 34.8–40.8% and range to 95%, seed broadcast on a fresh cut simply washes to the bottom. The fix is erosion matting pinned to the face with seed under it — the mat holds soil and seed through the storms it takes for roots to take over. And if the face was cut steeper than any mat can hold, the honest answer is to re-grade it to an angle that can be stabilized: flatter, benched, or both. We’d rather re-shape a slope once than re-mat it every spring.
The one-acre line, briefly — and when it’s an engineer’s job
One piece of law matters to a homeowner planning this work: under NC GS 113A-57(4) (Sedimentation Pollution Control Act of 1973), disturbing more than one acre on a tract requires an approved Erosion & Sedimentation Control plan, filed 30 or more days prior to initiating the activity, at $119 per acre (effective 2025-07-01). Most single-slope repairs stay well under that line; a full lot clearing or a long driveway cut can cross it. Separate from the paperwork: if the slope is slumping or cracking in arcs rather than rilling, or there’s a structure at the crest, that’s geotechnical territory and we’ll say so before anyone spends money on matting.

The dominant USDA-NRCS soil series in each county we serve, its drainage class, and the slope envelope it sits on. Almost everything is steep and well drained — ground that sheds water hard and rills on open cuts. The one exception worth naming is Henderson’s Dillard bottomland, which holds water instead and fails by saturation, not rilling.

Drainage class is the tell: a well or somewhat excessively drained series sheds storm water and erodes by rilling on open ground; the rare moderately-well-drained bottom holds water and fails by saturation. The right method list for your lot starts with which one you’re standing on.
Three tiers, cheapest leverage first.
