How to build a gravel driveway on a mountain slope.

How do you build a gravel driveway on a steep slope in North Carolina?

Route the drive across the slope instead of straight up it — WNC ridge ground like Henderson’s Ashe series runs a typical 40.2%, far steeper than any drive should climb directly. Crown or in-slope the surface so rain leaves immediately, ditch the uphill edge, and set a culvert wherever that water has to cross under — at a state-road entrance, NCDOT’s encroachment permit applies and the minimum pipe is 15 inches. Surface it with compacted ABC base under #57 stone at roughly 3–4 tons per 100 sq ft for a 2–3 inch lift ($20–$45/ton in the WNC market). Built as one system, a full grade-and-gravel job runs $1–$3/sq ft here, and maintenance regrades from about $0.50/sq ft keep it from washing.

A mountain driveway is a water project that happens to carry cars

On flat ground you can get away with treating a driveway as a strip of stone. You can’t here. USDA-NRCS soil mapping puts Henderson County’s ground anywhere from 0% to 95% slope and Buncombe’s from 2% to 95%, with the dominant ridge series — Henderson’s Ashe at a typical 40.2%, Buncombe’s Evard at 34.8% — classed well to somewhat excessively drained. Steep ground that sheds water fast means every storm sends concentrated runoff at your drive. The build order below — route, shape, ditch, pipe, gravel, maintain — is the order the water cares about. Rule one: route across the slope, not up it

The natural grade of the hill is not the grade of your driveway — the route decides that. On a 40.2% ridge, a straight shot to the house is unbuildable; a drive that traverses the contour on a benched cut, swings around the nose of the ridge, and lets a switchback absorb the elevation can climb the same hill at a grade a loaded concrete truck handles. Three rules of thumb we lay out on every site walk: take the long way and bank the gentleness, ease the transitions at the top and bottom so vehicles don’t bottom out or lose traction where they stop and start, and cross any hollow or draw at a right angle in one deliberate spot — because that low spot already runs water in every storm and it’s where a pipe belongs.

Crown vs. in-slope: pick where every inch of rain goes

A gravel surface survives by getting water off itself immediately. On open ground that means a crown — center higher than the edges, shedding both ways. On a drive benched into the hillside it usually means in-sloping toward the uphill edge, where a ditch line catches both the surface water and the runoff coming off the cut face and carries it — in one controlled channel — to a place it can cross. Out-sloping toward the downhill edge works only where that lower ground can take gentle sheet flow. The shape you must never leave is flat: on somewhat excessively drained ridge soil, flat-graded gravel channels every storm down the wheel tracks, and a single summer downpour will strip the stone to subgrade. The culvert: where the ditch becomes a pipe

Every ditch eventually has to cross under the drive — that crossing is the culvert, and its placement is read off the water, not a spacing chart: the road entrance, the bottom of long ditch runs, and any hollow the route crosses. Published WNC figures put an installed driveway culvert at $800–$8,000, driven by pipe diameter and length, headwalls and rip-rap, and access. At a state-maintained road, the entrance pipe is NCDOT’s jurisdiction: a new connection requires the NCDOT driveway encroachment permit (separate from any grading plan), the residential minimum pipe is 15 inches in an approved material (HDPE, RCP, or 16-gauge metal), and there’s a budget path most owners don’t know — furnish approved pipe and NCDOT sets it in the right-of-way ditch for about $10/linear foot plus a $50 permit/inspection fee. Sizing the pipes on your own drive is a drainage-area read — that’s covered on our culvert installation page — and if an existing pipe is crushed, rusted through, or undersized, culvert replacement early is far cheaper than rebuilding the washed-out drive below it. The gravel section: ABC base, #57 surface, and the math

The lasting section is two layers: compacted ABC (Aggregate Base Course) — crusher-run stone-and-fines that locks up hard under traffic — with a clean #57 surface course riding on top. The tonnage rule from published gravel-driveway data: about 3–4 tons per 100 square feet buys a 2–3 inch lift, and WNC stone runs $20–$45/ton delivered. So a 1,000-square-foot drive takes roughly 30–40 tons — $600–$1,800 in stone before any grading. Steeper climbs want a thicker base, which leans tonnage to the high end. How steep is too steep for a gravel driveway in the WNC mountains?
The hill’s grade is not the drive’s grade — that’s the whole trick. USDA-NRCS soil mapping in Henderson County runs from 0% on the Dillard valley bottoms to 95% on the steepest ridge units, and the county’s dominant Ashe series sits at a typical 40.2% — far steeper than any vehicle should ever climb in a straight line. A buildable driveway gets its grade from the route: run it across the slope on a benched cut, take the long way around the nose of the ridge, and let switchbacks absorb the elevation. Many WNC jurisdictions also apply fire-and-emergency access standards that cap driveway grade and require turnarounds past a certain length; we design to those where they apply. The honest answer is that almost any lot is routable — the steeper the natural ground, the more the route (not the gravel) is doing the work.
Should a mountain driveway be crowned or in-sloped?
It depends on where the drive sits on the hill, and the one wrong answer is flat. On open or gently sloped ground, a crown — the center higher than the edges — sheds rain both ways before it can gather speed. On a drive benched into a hillside, we usually in-slope the surface toward a ditch on the uphill edge, so runoff coming off the cut face and the surface both land in one controlled channel; out-sloping (tilting toward the downhill edge) only works where the lower side can take gentle sheet flow without eroding. What kills gravel drives here is water running along the surface: the dominant ridge soils — Ashe (somewhat excessively drained), Buncombe’s Evard at 34.8% — shed storm water fast, and once it channels down the wheel tracks it strips the stone in one downpour. Where should the culvert go on a sloped gravel driveway?
Wherever water already concentrates — not on a fixed spacing chart. Three places cover most mountain drives: the road entrance, where your drive crosses the roadside ditch (on a state-maintained road this is NCDOT’s pipe rule); the bottom of a long ditch run, where the uphill-edge ditch has collected enough flow that it needs to cross under the drive and discharge on the downhill side; and any hollow or draw the route has to cross, because that low spot already carries water in every storm. The pipe needs enough fall to self-clean, compacted cover to carry a loaded truck, and rock armor at the outlet so our fast ridge runoff can’t scour it out. The rule we work from: “A new driveway connecting to a state-maintained road requires an NCDOT driveway/street encroachment permit (separate from the E&SC plan).” In practice that means the entrance pipe in a state road’s ditch is NCDOT’s call — their residential minimum is a 15-inch pipe in an approved material (HDPE, RCP, or 16-gauge corrugated metal), sized up if the ditch flow demands it. How often should a gravel driveway be regraded so it doesn't wash out?
Read the surface, not the calendar. The cadence triggers are visible: the crown has flattened and water sits or runs down the middle; stone has migrated to the edges and the wheel tracks are down to subgrade; ruts are starting to braid and carry water; or the uphill ditch has silted in so runoff jumps onto the running surface. Any one of those means a maintenance pass — from about $0.50 per square foot, reshaping the crown and pulling the migrated gravel back into the section — before the next big storm turns it into a washout repair. After a heavy storm, also check the culvert: a pipe that’s clogged, crushed, or rusted through is the upstream cause of many of the washouts we see, and a culvert replacement done early is far cheaper than rebuilding the drive below a failed one.
