And forgotten pipe fails silently: a wheel crushes it, consolidating backfill sags it into a belly, roots find a joint, a landscaping project buries the end where it used to daylight. And the quietest killer we find: the buried outlet. A line that once daylighted cleanly gets graded over years later, the whole run backs up from its end, and the owner hunts a “clog” that doesn’t exist. Is a clogged outdoor drain a plumbing problem or an excavation problem?
One honest test: how often. A single slow inlet after a leaf-dump week is maintenance — clean it, screen it, done. Anything backing up inside the house belongs to a plumber, full stop; that’s their trade and their tooling. But an exterior line that blocks again every few months is reporting a structural death somewhere under the yard: a crushed or bellied length sits low, silt settles out of the standing water, and each new “clog” is the same dead spot refilling. No auger straightens a sag or rebuilds a collapsed wall. The pipe can’t complain, so the ground does it for you. When do you repair a section and when does the whole run get replaced?
Material first, geometry second. Solid smooth-wall pipe that took one insult — a truck over the trench, a root at a joint — earns a section repair: expose, cut to sound pipe, re-bed, splice. Old corrugated pipe argues for itself: when one length has crushed or ovalled, its siblings share the same wall, the same bedding, and the same years underground, and one re-lay costs less than three separate splice digs. How do you find the failure without trenching the whole yard?
Bracket, then confirm. A hose feeds the inlet while we watch the outlet: nothing arriving, half arriving late, or clean delivery each narrow the failure to a stretch of run. The surface testifies next — trench seams settle into readable troughs, a belly reads as a soft dip that stays damp, and grit off steep Evard-type shed ground (34.8%) collects exactly where the fall went wrong. We open one small window over the strongest evidence, verify against the pipe itself, and scope the dig from there.
