Canton runs on gravel drives. It’s the Pigeon River mill town at the low, built-up east end of Haywood County, where Interstate 40 follows the valley and the town spreads along the water — so it carries more gentle river-terrace ground than the steep mountain towns to the west. But the moment a lot leaves the valley floor and starts up the Beaverdam or Newfound ridges that wall the town in, it’s a private gravel drive running hundreds of feet of climb off the road. Almost every one of them tells the same story after a hard summer: the gravel washed, the centerline rutted, and there’s a pile of good stone at the bottom curve. The instinct is to order another load. On this ground, that’s money down the hill.

The soil map says why. The shoulders Canton’s drives climb — Wayah at a typical 27.8%, Burton at 29.7%, the bouldery Cullasaja at 32.7%, and the steepest Plott ground toward the Plott Balsams — are all well drained. Rain doesn’t pond and soak in; it runs. Put loose stone on a 27.8% grade with no crown and you’ve built a streambed: the water finds the wheel tracks, strips the fine material that holds the stone together, and carries the rest downhill. On the gentle Braddock and Hayesville river terraces along the Pigeon valley (12.2–14.4%), the subgrade is the weak point: where the lowest ground near the river is wet or soft we cut it out, lay geotextile fabric so the stone can’t mix down into the mud, then build a compacted ABC base back up. On the Beaverdam and Newfound ridge climbs the problem flips to rock: the Cullasaja soil the ridges are made of is a Typic Humudepts full of cobbles and stone, so we’re often building a base over bouldery ground rather than tilling it into soil — and we key the base into firm ground and run it deeper, toward 4 inches, because the fast-shedding slope demands it. Either way the stone goes in lifts and gets compacted, not feathered loose. A typical finished surface is 2–4 inches of stone over a base built to the drive’s actual traffic and grade.

Crown and culverts — the part that keeps your stone

The reason a well-built gravel drive survives a Pigeon River storm season isn’t the stone — it’s the shape and the water exits. A crown (the drive humped slightly higher in the center) sheds water sideways off both edges within a few feet, so nothing runs the length of the surface. On a long Beaverdam or Newfound climb the water that does collect needs somewhere to leave: a graded ditch with turnouts, a broad-based dip, or a culvert where concentrated flow has to cross under the drive. This is the overlap with driveway grading — on the ridges, gravel and grading are one job, because the best stone in the world washes off a drive that has no crown and no place to put the water. How much gravel — the tonnage math

People are often surprised how much stone a drive eats. The working figure is one ton per 80–100 square feet at 2 inches deep.
