That geography is why a culvert here is never one-size-fits-all: the same town carries lazy valley-floor flow on its terraces and fast, concentrated slope flow on the mountainsides above, and the two crossings get sized very differently.

The slopes above town shed fast and concentrate

Step off the valley floor and Clyde’s ground rises into Haywood’s real mountain soils, and the culvert problem flips. The dominant series on these mountainsides are Wayah (27.8%) and Burton (29.7%); alongside them sit the bouldery Cullasaja (32.7%) and the steep Plott — named for the Plott Balsams that wall in Haywood — running 36.5% typical and far steeper in spots.
