Clyde sits low on the Pigeon River floor between Canton and Waynesville along US 19/23, and that splits its driveways two ways. Valley drives on the gentle Braddock and Hayesville river terraces (12.2–14.4%, well drained) hold their shape but break at the apron: on a low lot the road end is the property’s low point, so Pigeon River backwater and road runoff pond there, soften the base, and turn it to mud — Clyde flooded hard in 2004 and again in Tropical Storm Fred in 2021. The fix is raising and crowning the drive plus a real outlet and culvert at the road, not more gravel. Slope drives climbing onto Wayah, Burton, and the steep Plott ground above town (27.8–36.5%) wash out down the centerline — fixed with crown, ditch, and frequent water exits, and a base built over the bouldery Cullasaja stone where it shows. The river owns the bottom of your drive
Clyde is a river town. It spreads across the Pigeon River floor between Canton to the east and Waynesville to the west, on the US 19/23 four-lane — the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway — with I 40 just north. On the valley lots that gives Clyde more of Haywood County’s scarce gentle ground than the ridge towns, and the drives there sit on Braddock and Hayesville river-terrace soils the USDA survey (NC606) puts at a gentle 12.2% and 14.4%, both well drained.
Well-drained soil and a gentle grade should mean an easy drive — and the running surface usually is. The trouble is the apron. On a low Pigeon River lot the road end of the drive is often the lowest point on the property, and a gentle grade can’t shed when the lowest point is where the water collects. When the river runs high — the 2004 hurricane season and Tropical Storm Fred in 2021 both put river water into town — backwater and road-ditch flow pond at the apron, the base saturates, gravel pumps into the soft subgrade, and the bottom of the drive turns to mud. More stone sinks into it. The repair is structural and about water: raise and crown the drive, cut a real outlet, and set the culvert at the road so the water leaves before it sits. Persistent under-drive wet is drainage territory along the edge.
The slopes above town wash drives out
Step off the valley floor and a Clyde drive climbs Haywood’s real mountain soils. The series that dominate up here are Wayah (27.8%) and Burton (29.7%), joined by the bouldery Cullasaja (32.7%) and by steep Plott ground — it takes its name from the Plott Balsams that wall in Haywood — running 36.5% typical and far steeper in spots. A drive on that grade that has lost its crown puts the runoff in its own wheel tracks, and a hard Pigeon River storm cuts ruts straight down the centerline and stacks the gravel at the bottom curve. The fix is geometry: rebuild the crown, re-cut the ditch, and add water exits — turnouts, broad-based dips, or a culvert where flow must cross — at intervals short enough that runoff never gathers speed. The Cullasaja stone is the wild card: a Typic Humudepts full of cobble and stone, it often needs the right base built over rock rather than a fresh load of gravel.
