These soils are well drained, the slope is gentle enough for gravity to spread effluent evenly, and they sit high enough above the channel that the seasonal table isn’t in the way. This is the ground where a conventional gravity system — tank settles solids, effluent flows downhill to a gravel drainfield, no pump, no panel, lowest cost — is the right answer. The Pisgah side: well-drained, but too steep for gravity

The fix is the same as the wet floodplain reached from the other direction: a Low Pressure Pipe (LPP) or pump system that doses the effluent under pressure so it spreads evenly across the contour. So Mills River pushes a lot to an alternative system from both ends of the valley — high water on the floor, steep rock up the side — and leaves the benches in the middle for conventional.
Why a perc test and soil evaluation come first
