Most WNC drainage is a shed story: water arrives fast off well-drained ridge shoulders and you build it a route downhill. Mills River’s valley floor is the exception. The bottomland soil, Dillard, is the only moderately well drained series among Henderson County’s dominant soils — it sits in the 0–8% band along the Mills River channel at a typical 3.7% grade, with a seasonal high water table.
