Horse Shoe takes its name from a horseshoe meander of the French Broad River, and the community’s ground is organized by that bend: benches of deep terrace soil — Tate at 13%, Tusquitee at 16.7%, Saunook at 19.8% — stepping down along US 64 to the wet Dillard bottomland inside the loop, with the Evard, Porters, and bouldery Cullasaja foothills (28.1–34.4%) rising behind.
