Horse Shoe wraps a horseshoe meander of the French Broad River, and that broad bend is why it became farm country — long lots, long drives, gentle ground. The valley floor sits on Tusquitee and Saunook cove and terrace soils the USDA survey (NC089) puts at a forgiving 16.7–19.8%, both well drained. That sounds like easy ground for a drive, and the soil is — but the problem is the grade: a long drive on near-flat ground has nowhere to send its water.
