Why a Brevard pad is rain and rock, not just dirt
USDA mappers logged 55 distinct soil series across Transylvania County (NC175), and the dominant ground is steep and stony. The lead series, Unaka, sits at a typical 37.6% grade; Chestnut runs 36.8%, Porters 34.9%, cobbly Cullasaja 31.6%, and the somewhat-excessively-drained Ashe ridge series climbs to 39.3%, mapped as steep as 95%. Crucially, all of it weathers over hard bedrock, and rock outcrop is a major mapped component of this survey — so a Brevard bench can pass through rippable saprolite one foot and a hammer-only ledge the next. The second half of the problem is the sky. At the foot of Pisgah National Forest — with DuPont State Forest, Cedar Mountain, and the Toxaway highlands ringing the county — Transylvania is one of the wettest counties in the eastern United States, and these well drained ridge soils shed that rain fast.
