Candler runs on gravel drives, and the reason is geography. The town sits at the mouth of the Hominy Valley in western Buncombe County, where the gentle creek-bottom floor meets the Pisgah-side mountains, and a private gravel drive here lands on one of two very different kinds of ground — sometimes both on the same lot. Down along Hominy Creek near Sand Hill, Enka, and Bear Creek the floor is some of the gentlest building ground in the county. Head west and up the Pisgah Highway (NC-151) corridor and the Pisgah View ridgeline toward Pisgah National Forest, and the drives climb hundreds of feet off the state road on steep, fast-shedding shoulders. Almost every one of them has the same complaint after a hard summer: the gravel washed, the climb is washboarded, and there’s a pile of good stone at the bottom curve. The instinct is to order another load. On this ground, that’s money down the hill.

The soil map says why — and it says the valley and the ridge fail for opposite reasons. The Hominy Valley terraces are Braddock, Tate, and Clifton at 11.6–16%; the shoulders Candler’s drives climb are Evard and Cowee at a typical 34.8%, with Burton and Wayah higher up at 40.8–40.2%. Every one of those series is well drained. On the ridge, that means rain doesn’t pond and soak in; it runs. The valley floor: the stone you pay for is the base you never see

“Just dump a load and spread it” fails on the Hominy Valley floor for a simple reason. The gentle Tate, Braddock, and Clifton terraces around Sand Hill, Enka, and Bear Creek (11.6–16%) are well-drained on paper, but a drive crossing the creek bottom is on the lowest ground on the lot, where water from the whole property and the road collects. A thin layer of surface stone over that soft, sometimes saturated subgrade pumps down into the dirt under the first wet tire and disappears. The fix is structural and most of the stone goes where you’ll never see it: we cut out the soft spots, lay geotextile fabric so the stone can’t mix down into the mud, then build a compacted ABC base back up in lifts before the driving surface ever goes on. Spend the tonnage on the base on the valley floor and the surface lasts; skip it and you’re back ordering stone every spring.

The Pisgah-side climb: depth, compaction, and the crown that keeps your stone

Up the Evard/Cowee shoulders off NC-151 the build flips. Here the ground is firm and fast-draining, so the threat isn’t a pumping subgrade — it’s gravity and runoff. We key the base into firm ground and run the ABC deeper, toward 4 inches, because the fast-shedding slope demands a thicker, locked layer that won’t move. Then comes the part that actually keeps your stone: the crown. A drive humped slightly higher in the center sheds water sideways off both edges within a few feet, so nothing runs the length of the surface and gathers speed. On a long Pisgah-side climb the water that does collect needs somewhere to leave — a graded ditch with turnouts, a broad-based dip, or a culvert where concentrated flow has to cross under the drive. This is the overlap with driveway grading: on the steep shoulders, the gravel and the shaping are one job, because the best stone in the world washes off a drive that has no crown and no place to put the water.
