On Black Mountain’s cove ground, the stone is the easy part — the base and the crown are the job
Black Mountain runs on gravel drives. The county median parcel is just 0.55 acres across 90,626 Buncombe parcels, and the in-town lots near State Street are tight — but the buildable reaches of the upper Swannanoa Valley are coves, hollows tucked between ridge spurs, where a private gravel drive climbs hundreds of feet off the state road to reach the house. The climbs toward the Seven Sisters, Greybeard, the Montreat ridges, and the Black Mountains range behind Mount Mitchell, the hollows above Ridgecrest and out toward Swannanoa — almost every one is served by gravel. And almost every one has the same complaint after a hard summer: the gravel washed, the climb is washboarded, and there’s a pile of good stone at the bottom curve. The instinct is to order another load. At the head of this valley, that’s money down the cove.
The soil map says why. The shoulders Black Mountain’s drives climb — Evard and Cowee at a typical 34.8%, with Burton and Wayah higher up at 40.8–40.2% — are all well drained. Rain doesn’t pond and soak in; it sheds off the ridge and concentrates in the bottom of the hollow. Put loose stone on a 34.8% grade with no crown and you’ve built the streambed for the whole cove: the water finds the wheel tracks, strips the fine material that holds the stone together, and carries the rest down toward the Swannanoa River. The answer isn’t more gravel — it’s the right gravel, laid to depth over a compacted base and shaped with a crown so the water leaves the surface before it can gather speed off the ridge.
ABC vs. #57 — two stones, two jobs
The single most common gravel mistake we fix in the Swannanoa Valley is the wrong stone on the surface. ABC — “aggregate base course,” what everyone here calls crush-and-run — is crushed angular stone with the fines (the rock dust) left in. Those fines are the glue: compact ABC and it locks into a hard, dense layer that holds a crown and carries a loaded truck. That’s why ABC is the right choice for both the base and the driving surface on a cove drive. #57 stone is the opposite — clean, washed, roughly 3/4-inch rock with no fines. It drains like a colander, which makes it perfect for a wet base layer, a French-drain trench, or the stone around a culvert — but with nothing to lock it, loose #57 on a 34.8% Evard climb toward Montreat just rolls underfoot and migrates downhill. We use each where it belongs: ABC where the drive has to hold its shape on the climb, #57 where water has to move through it.
Depth, base prep, and compaction
“Just dump a load and spread it” fails here for a simple reason: a thin skin of stone over soft or unprepared ground pumps down into the dirt under the first wet tire and disappears. A drive that lasts is built up. On the gentle Tate and Braddock valley terraces (11.6–14.4% — the valley floor along the Swannanoa River, the North Fork, and Flat Creek where the coves flatten out), the subgrade is the weak point: the runoff the hollows funnel down keeps that ground wet, so where it’s soft we cut it out, lay geotextile fabric so the stone can’t mix down into the mud, then build a compacted ABC base back up. On the steeper Evard/Cowee cove shoulders toward the Seven Sisters we key the base into firm ground and run it deeper — toward 4 inches — because the fast-shedding slope demands it. Either way the stone goes in lifts and gets compacted, not feathered loose. A typical finished surface is 2–4 inches of stone over a base built to the drive’s actual traffic and grade.
Crown and culverts — the part that keeps your stone
The reason a well-built gravel drive survives a Swannanoa Valley storm season isn’t the stone — it’s the shape and the water exits. A crown (the drive humped slightly higher in the center) sheds water sideways off both edges within a few feet, so nothing runs the length of the surface. But on a cove drive the bigger threat is the water that isn’t even the drive’s own: the whole hollow above it sheds onto the climb. That water needs somewhere to leave before it ever reaches the stone — a graded ditch with turnouts, a broad-based dip, or a culvert where concentrated flow crosses under the drive. This is the overlap with driveway grading — on the cove shoulders, gravel and grading are one job, because the best stone in the world washes off a drive that has no crown and no place to put the hollow’s water. How much gravel — the tonnage math
People are often surprised how much stone a cove drive eats. The working figure is one ton per 80–100 square feet at 2 inches deep. A 100-foot drive at 12 feet wide is roughly 1,200 square feet — about 12–15 tons for a single 2-inch surface course, and more if it needs a fresh base under it. Stone is sold by the ton delivered, so we measure your drive’s length and width, decide how deep the base and surface need to be for the grade, and figure the tonnage off real numbers — not a round guess that leaves you short or paying to truck off the excess. On the long climbs toward Montreat and the Seven Sisters, where the stone has to go up a 34.8% grade and stay, that difference is real money.
Permits: the encroachment rule and the 1-acre line
Regraveling or repairing an existing drive almost never needs a permit.
