The gorge-wall climb: where the drive becomes the stream
Lake Lure wraps the lake at the bottom of Hickory Nut Gorge, below Chimney Rock, where the Rocky Broad River comes down off the Blue Ridge escarpment and US 74A threads the narrow valley. For a driveway that gradient is the whole job. Where a drive pins to the gorge wall, the soils are Evard, Cliffield, Fannin, and Rion — the survey (NC161) putting them at 38.6%, 39.8%, 43.7%, and 45.3% typical, the steepest dominant driveway ground anywhere we work, and steeper still on the worst faces. All of it is well drained, so rain doesn’t soak and linger — it races. Keep the crown on a gorge climb and the drive throws that racing water sideways into the ditch — and lives. A drive that’s gone flat puts the racing water in its own wheel tracks, and one hard gorge storm strips the fines, washboards the climb, and stacks the gravel at the bottom curve. We rebuild the shape (crown or in-slope), re-cut the ditch, and give the water exits — turnouts, broad-based dips, or a culvert where flow must cross — at intervals short enough that runoff never gathers speed.
The rock: a base built over stone
The other Lake Lure wild card isn’t water — it’s rock. The Greenlee footslope here is a bouldery Typic Dystrudepts (23.6%) full of cobbles and stone, and on a gorge-wall drive that rock surfaces fast. The base often has to be built over stone rather than topped with a fresh load of gravel: you can’t compact ABC into a void between boulders and expect it to hold. The forgiving side: lakeside benches and footslope coves
Not every Lake Lure drive is a gorge climb. On a lakeside bench or gentler upland the ground rides the dominant Pacolet clay — a Typic Kanhapludults the survey puts at a workable 13.2%, well drained — with the deeper Tate footslope coves (21.7%) and red-clay terraces like Hiwassee (8.5%) mixed in. Those drives are forgiving: crown the running surface so it sheds to the edges, keep a working ditch, top the base, and they hold for years. The Pacolet clay still wants positive drainage and proper compaction — but it is not the benched, rock-fighting climb the gorge wall demands.
The NCDOT question, answered up front
A new or upgraded connection to a state-maintained road — US 74A through the gorge, or any NCDOT route — needs an NCDOT driveway encroachment permit (A new driveway connecting to a state-maintained road requires an NCDOT driveway/street encroachment permit (separate from the E&SC plan).), and NCDOT specifies the pipe under the apron.
