In the Etowah Valley, the stone is the easy part — the base and the crown are the job
Etowah is a river-valley town. It spreads across the broad French Broad river-terrace valley west of Hendersonville along US 64, between Horse Shoe and the Transylvania line, where Crab Creek and Cane Creek come down out of the mountains to meet the river and the Etowah Valley golf bottomland sits low against the water. Plenty of that ground is served by long private gravel drives — the flat lanes running back off US 64 across the valley floor, and the steeper drives climbing west toward DuPont State Forest and the Brevard line. Almost every one of them has a complaint after a hard summer, but here it comes in two flavors: the hill drive washed out and washboarded, and the valley drive went soft and potholed. The instinct on both is to order another load of gravel. On this ground, that’s money down the hill — or into the mud.
The soil map says why, and it splits Etowah cleanly. The lowest valley bottom — the true French Broad and Crab Creek floodplain — grades into Dillard soil, which is only moderately well drained at a near-flat 3.7% and holds a seasonal high water table. Climb the western edge of town toward the Pisgah foothills and you cross onto Evard shoulders (28.1%, well drained) and, higher up, Ashe ridge ground (40.2%, somewhat excessively drained). In between sit the clay-rich Hayesville benches (13%) — a kaolinitic Typic Kanhapludults whose dense subsoil holds water once a lot is cut. Two completely different gravel problems, one valley, and the right build is different for each.
ABC vs. #57 — two stones, two jobs
The single most common gravel mistake we fix around Etowah is the wrong stone on the surface. ABC — “aggregate base course,” what everyone here calls crush-and-run — is crushed angular stone with the fines (the rock dust) left in. Those fines are the glue: compact ABC and it locks into a hard, dense layer that holds a crown and carries a loaded truck. That’s why ABC is the right choice for both the base and the driving surface on an Etowah drive, valley or foothill. #57 stone is the opposite — clean, washed, roughly 3/4-inch rock with no fines. It drains like a colander, which makes it perfect for a wet base layer on the soggy Dillard bottom, a French-drain trench, or the stone around a culvert — but with nothing to lock it, loose #57 on a 28.1% Evard climb just rolls underfoot and migrates downhill. We use each where it belongs: ABC where the drive has to hold its shape, #57 where water has to move through it.
Depth, base prep, and compaction
“Just dump a load and spread it” fails on both ends of Etowah, for opposite reasons. On the flat Dillard floodplain near the French Broad and Crab Creek, the subgrade is the weak point: a thin skin of stone over wet, moderately well drained ground pumps down into the soft soil under the first loaded tire and disappears. There we cut out the soft spots, lay geotextile fabric so the stone can’t mix down into the mud, and build a compacted ABC base up above the seasonal wet line. On the climbing Evard and Ashe shoulders toward DuPont we key the base into firm ground and run it deeper — toward 4 inches — because the fast-shedding slope demands it, and the Hayesville clay benches in between need the base to bridge a subsoil that holds water. Either way the stone goes in lifts and gets compacted, not feathered loose. A typical finished surface is 2–4 inches of stone over a base built to the drive’s actual traffic, grade, and subgrade.
Crown and culverts — the part that keeps your stone
The reason a well-built gravel drive survives a Blue Ridge storm season isn’t the stone — it’s the shape and the water exits. A crown (the drive humped slightly higher in the center) sheds water sideways off both edges within a few feet, so nothing runs the length of the surface. On a long climb toward DuPont the water that does collect needs somewhere to leave: a graded ditch with turnouts, a broad-based dip, or a culvert where concentrated flow has to cross under the drive. Down on the valley floor the crown does a different job — it keeps water from standing on the surface over the slow-draining Dillard bottom and turning the drive to washboard. This is the overlap with driveway grading and drainage — on Etowah ground, gravel and grading are one job, because the best stone in the world washes off a hill drive with no crown and sinks into a valley drive with no place to put the water. How much gravel — the tonnage math
People are often surprised how much stone a drive eats. The working figure is one ton per 80–100 square feet at 2 inches deep. A 100-foot drive at 12 feet wide is roughly 1,200 square feet — about 12–15 tons for a single 2-inch surface course, and more if it needs a fresh base under it. Stone is sold by the ton delivered, so we measure your drive’s length and width, decide how deep the base and surface need to be for the grade and the subgrade, and figure the tonnage off real numbers — not a round guess that leaves you short or paying to truck off the excess. Permits: the encroachment rule and the 1-acre line
Regraveling or repairing an existing drive almost never needs a permit.
