Short intervals between exits are what keep the water slow. Base: ABC stone compacted in lifts under the running surface, so loaded tires can’t pump the fines up and start the washboard cycle again. Skip any one of the three on a 34.8% Evard shoulder and the drive re-fails; do all three and the maintenance interval stretches from months to years.
Valley terraces are a different job
Down on the French Broad and Swannanoa terraces — West Asheville, Oakley, Kenilworth, parts of Arden — the ground is Braddock and Tate at 11.6–14.4%, and the water is lazy. Drives there pothole and go soft instead of washing out: the failure is in the base, not the slope. We cut the soft spots out and rebuild them from compacted ABC up — not skim-patch the hole — then crown the surface so it stops holding water.
